The Empire State Building was one of the last products of the Golden Age of skyscrapers. After World War II, the elegance of the Art Deco giants gave way to the boxy lines of modern height rises. Why did this happen? Partly, it grew out of an argument amongst architects over the best ways to dress the frame of a building.
